Or how about:
Mary immaculate, star of the morning
Chosen before the creation began
chosen to bring for they bridal adorning
Woe to the serpent, and rescue to man
Here in an orbit of shadow and sadness
Veiling thy splendour, thy course thou hast run
Now thou art throned in all glory and gladnessCrowned by the hands of thy saviour and sun
And so on for another four verses.
It's not that the changes have been from a golden age where everybody sang the hymns, and lived up to them and spoke Latin and all. In many ways it was a pretty sombre time generally, and a lot of the time people went through the motions and yawned though the rituals and so forth, as they still do. And terrorising children in schools was widespread enough, though I doubt if that was any truer of Catholic schools than most others.
But I think it is important to recognise that a lot of rich and beautiful customs and traditions have been fairly ruthlessly ditched, along with a lot of baggage we are well rid of. I think that we should feel able to preserve and revive them, without that being seen as getting tied in with the kind of bigots who'd want to bring back the repressive ways.
