I gave the kids the option of laser or color inkjet when I replaced their stolen computer stuff, and ended up buying an Epson inkjet printer. I made sure it had separate cartridges for each color. Epson and Canon both have standard sized cartridges for color and black, or in both you can replace the black with a super-sized one, which is what I'll buy any day now because they're getting the low ink message. One of these days I'll set it up so we can share our printers, since I have the laser jet in my office.

Part of the reason the Epson is so much less expensive than the Canon is that Epson still has the paper upright at the back, and after a while the roller starts grabbing too much. I had that problem with my old HP laser printer. But to pay $100 more to get the horizontal paper tray, I don't think so. The whole printer only cost $99. We'll save that extra $100 and use it for the next printer (and be sure to find a horizontal tray then).
