Thread Name: Work Songs & Labor Movement
Subject: Lyr Add: WORK SONG^^
Oscar Brown, Jr. put words to a Nat Adderly (I know, this is supposed to be folk/blues not jazz)tune called Work Song - it seems too appropriate to leave out because of some class attitude.

Breakin' up big rocks on the chain gang
Breakin' rocks and servin' my time
Breakin' rocks all day on the chain gang
'Cause I been convicted of crime
Hold it steady right there while I hit it
(Grunt)There I reckon that oughta get it
And I'm workin', I'm workin'
But I still got so terrible long to go

I committed crime, Lord, of needin'
Crime of being hungry and poor
I left the grocery store man bleedin'
When he caught me robbin' his store
Hold it steady right there while I hit it
There, I reckon that oughta get it
And I'm workin', I'm workin'
But I still got so terrible long to go

The judge he said five years of hard lablor
On the chain gang you gotta go
The judge he said five years of hard labor
I heard my woman scream, "Lordy, No!"
Hold it steady right there while I hit it
There I reckon that oughta get it
And I'm workin', I'm workin'
But I still got so terrible long to go

I want to see my aweet honey lady
Wanna break this chain off and run
Wanna lay down somewhere shady
Lord it sure is hot in the sun
Hold it steady right there while I hit
There I reckon that oughta get it
And I'm workin', I'm workin'
But I still got so terrible long to go

Breakin' up big rocks on the chain gang
Breakin' rocks and servin' my time
