Q, I'd be curious to know if you've found any other instances of the verse "I grieve my Lord from day to day/I'm off the straight and narrow way." It sounds like a natural lead-in to the chorus. And the word "grieve" can certainly be used as a transitive verb. (I'm not ready to give up my interpretation just yet!)
