There's a nice little place in Phoenix itself called the Fiddler's Dream Coffeehouse. It's sort of in the Camelback Mountain vicinity. They have an open mike on Thursday's (IIRC), and regular coffeehouses on the weekend. I know Tom Tuerff, one of the guys who runs it, and a couple of the performers who go there. I did the open mike myself when I was there on a business trip.
