I think flickr is a tremendous resource. It really comes into its own when there is some big thing happens - natural disasters, bombings etc, but in a way it's even better when it's ordinary stuff, like music events, people and places you see around.   And there are some pretty good discussion threads and so forth, if you dig a bit.

Even the free service is pretty good, and the full pro subscription is remarkably good value.

When I want to use a link to a picture in a thread here, either one of my own, or maybe something from a book, I tend to stick it on flickr, and use that as the link.

I'm glad black walnut started this thread - I'd like to see people using flickr as a kind of outpost for Mudcat.
