We've hung our instuments on the wall for decades. We use a long one by four, stained, with several one quarter inch dowel rods coming out of it. One dowel per instrument. Dowels have a slight angle to them so the instruments are held in place by gravity. We have a piece of cheap cloth material attached to the board, about four by ten feet, covering the wall behind the instruments. This keeps the instruments away from the wall and it looks better, too.

Each instrument has a hanger on it which is easily removed. Right now we're using rope but we have used insulated wire. One caution. We once had one of the wire hangers fail and Jerry's guitar fell down the stair well. Had the five huge cracks professionally repaired for $600 so be carefull.
