Ebbie, I have been told that is so at places in Ireland, often. At the one I described, after I had been lapping it up for many hours, a big Scot (who throws his head back, closes his eyes, and sings 8-12 minute Big Ballads) told me, "You have been here listening all day. It is your turn to give us a song." I said, "I don't have the voice for a big place like this." He said, "Then sing a small song. I will listen." He did, too.
I think it is less often spoken, but surely often thought, at places here too.
I know when I joined the one a.m. group at the all-night cabin, as I opened the door, someone said, "Welcome. Your toll is one song." Someone else came in later, and was greeted with "You owe us a song, but you can wait a bit for it." And when one person listened a short while then headed for bed, "You aren't leaving without a song are you?" She did, but it was evident that the folks remaining thought it was not quite right.
