Susan-Marie, your hypnotist's technique sounds a lot like EMDR , a rapid-eye-movement therapy that is often used to treat those with Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. I found it very helpful after a harrowing experience.
And although I've never had "stage fright" I certainly get that nervous excitement your hypnotist describes as helpful.
