I was lucky enough to be present for some of Fritz's Jim Kweskin Jug Band performances in the late 1960's (I roomed with Jim's brother Richard for a short while and my sister was a friend of Maria's). As already mentioned, he made an ordinary jug and a washtub, piece of rope, a stick, and a glove (not to mention all the exotics he created) into precision instruments played with humor and deep feeling.

As each fine person I've known dies, I feel more loss, like more pieces of myself have died. Although Fritz smoked too much (and Gauloises at that), he was a good person and an extraordinary entertainer and I can't help feeling that it is unfair to the world that such good people as this die. I hope his memory will live forever among us who remain.
