That's interesting duellingbazoukis; the Authority and the Church would seem to be the whole point. Phillip Pullman's website (just visited) says that he is pleased to announce that New Line Cinema has appointed Anand Tucker to direct the first part. So wish may have been granted. I don't recall a date so I'm not sure what this refers to; I'll revisit.
