As a long-term insomniac who has half-heard this compilation of British song tunes more times than I care to mention, I seem to recall that it has gone through a number of arrangements over the years. I don't believe it is broadcast on the World Service, just on Radio 4, so I don't feel that World Music would be a suitable alternative.

Perhaps they couldn't find a new arrangement and couldn't be bothered to dig out an earlier version. As has been said, another news broadcast is a somewhat anodyne way to start the day, even if the "theme" had become stale.

An arrangement of less cliched songs might be one way forward, but it doesn't sound as if they are open to suggestions, anyway.
