If a child is beaten into some other shape in his early years, he may or may not be so suppressed he can't find himself. If he cannot, then he needs a moral code or set of rules to steer by because his self-generated sense of right and wrong has been overwhelmed and buried. That doesn't mean he didn't have it in the first place, though.
