Indeed, the tradition is as you say in Greek weddings - I have been on the receiving end of a few such cases of hospitality, and I did indeed offer it myself to others once or twice at my kids' christenings and my son's wedding. The nicest thing about it is that such cases are not treated as a favour either by the offerer or the receiver - it is simply an invitation to join in someone's joy and celebration, and an honour for both host and guest.
