They all claim that their experience is that men will only willingly leave a marriage or union if they have someone else to go to, whereas women willingly intstigate divorce without necessarily having a partner to go to.

OTOH, we have two female friends who took ages to leave their abusive partners because they thought they weren't anyone if they didn't have a boyfriend. I'm no psychologist, but that's certainly my experience of younger women. It's likely different when you're older and more secure, I guess, and there's another factor to consider - how this behaviour changes with age.
