One kid at this spelling bee was knocked out when the majority of judges, aided by a tape recorder, were convinced that he said "d" as the last letter of a word that ended with "ing." He (and his mother) accepted it so graciously that I had to tell him afterwards (he even stayed to the end) that in my opinion he was the winner of the evening. Yes, lots of crying and heartache that night.
