It's really a crying shame that CBGB is closing this fall. That also includes CB's 313 Gallery next door. The owner Hilly Kristal tried very hard to keep the club open, but the nonprofit homeless shelter that owns the building had to raise the rent to pay for the programs it runs. Kristal couldn't afford the new rent which would be several times the old rent, and he couldn't find comparable space anywhere in Manhattan he could afford south of Washington Heights. The only options were to move way uptown, meaning north of Harlem, move to one of the outer boroughs like the Bronx or Queens, move to the suburbs, or leave New York City area completely. He chose to leave and accept an offer to open his club in one of the Las Vegas casinos. With the Bottom Line gone and with Satalla gone, this will be a monumental blow to New York's live music scene.
