My experience with black bears is that they are real chickenshits unless they're cornered or with cubs. They are pretty cautious even approaching a crayfish or frog, in a kinda playful way. Nonetheless, they're also unpredictable, so I carry a knife, not that it would deter a determined bear. Rosie The Wonder Dog is terrified of bears.
