From personal experience I can vouch for the effect - though it is not guarranteed to work. It depends on the person and the headache. The effects can be temprorary but - I am not complaining.

There is certainly a raised level of adrenaline - which is an effective analgesic, but testosterone levels rise too - in both sexes.
