Amazing! The electoral college was first used by the Visigoths. Really! No kidding! The idea was that the Germanic king could be an effective leader only if he had the approval of his nobles. Various permutations of this system have been used off and on throughout history. Currently, the College of Cardinals that elects the Pope is an example of an electoral college.

Other than that, the United States is the only modern country that uses an electoral college in choosing its leaders.
