You are of course pedantically correct McG of Harlow, but the first past the post system and the distribution of votes for the two major parties makes it very difficult for third parties to gain many seats. As a result I can only remember this happening once in my lifetime.

The point is that Tony Blair at one remove became prime minister following an election by an electoral college. Admittedly not in national elections.
