You're right (though I suspect KKK membership was not required everywhere to be a Democrat--LBJ for instance was not one). But in those days the Solid South was Democrat--and not for civil rights. Since then, however, things have changed.   There are reasonable Republicans--but they seem to be a dying breed. After the election this fall there probably will be even fewer--thanks to Bush's Iraq war.
