What makes quite a few of the stupid ones stupid is that they were originally delivered as sarcasm, with full awareness of the "misfit."

Adopted by those who've failed to think about it, and who just assume they "mean something" because lots of people say them, they lose their effect - because the users are too stupid to give them proper application.
