What's the problem? Here in France the local council workforce keep the verges clear with tractor carried mechanical cutters, then use strimmers to clear around the signs and finally, once a year, come along with a power washer and CLEAN the signs (including the back!)

OK so they only put the signs up from one direction. If you are travelling a different way to that, you will only see the back of the sign you needed! But this is France....
