The universality of this song (IMO) is how well it deals with each generation having it's own rare ol time that is changed beyond recognition. I tend to be a tad sensitive to racist statements especially those about interracial relationships and this song has never brought that sentiment out.   The verse in question is full of longing and loss. But for me the fact that "she took away my soul" refocuses back to his loss of her not who she chose. It's not in my interpretation.
