Thread Name: BS: Young men 'suicide'
Subject: RE: BS: Young men 'suicide'
Just BTW, the number of suicides for young people is not particularly high compared to other age groups, most suicides are committed by over 60 year old people.

But it looks different for the simple reason that young people rarely die from diseases, whereas old people do. In young people, suicides are the number one (or two, behind accidents) reason for death, whereas in older people other reasons for death dwarf the numbers of suicide.

So, if you look at suicides in a how many of 100,000 per year way, you will find that young people are not more likely than old people to commit suicide. However, if you look at the data in a how many percent of that age group die by suicide way, then and only then it looks like a particular problem of young age. But that's a statistical artifact, for the same absolute number across age cohorts looks relatively higher in an age group in which natural death or death by disease is extremely rare.
