Thread Name: Lyr Req: Free Mexican Airforce (Peter Rowan)
Subject: RE: Free Mexican Airforce
There's just something tiresome and diminishing about Rowan's broadcasting his love of pot, and using it as a bonding ritual with his listeners. It's a low denominator of creative expression, and the kind of referent that becomes not about the music, but about itself. Which becomes boring, if you aren't still working out your cultural identity as a stoner.

Check out his bleary meanderings in front of the camera in the bluegrass documentary "High Lonesome" to watch dope point back to dope. It's not that Pete doesn't have a lot of stuff worth hearing - he's just to high to make any sense. I guess to some folks that comes across as subversive in some positive way. To me it looks dysfunctional, like Hank III's need to make his career be about substance abuse.

And the specific drug isn't the issue, Steve-o. I'd feel the same if he was addressing a roomful of Parrotheads about the righteousness of margaritas. It's frat-house kid-stuff, and Pete could retire it from his act with no loss of regard from the folks who came to hear him sing and pick.
