"Bust a gut" is only an expression, not a command. When someone says to you, "I nearly bust a gut laughing" it means that they laughed hard and long. If your boss says, "I want you to bust a gut getting this done" it means to really work on something. It do NOT mean to literally bust a gut.

In the future, don't take everything so literally, okay? If you're confused, ask the Mudcat and we'll all help you to either understanding or confusion.
