It depends on the soundscape you want to create. Steel strings convey a certain message, nylon strings a different one, unaccompanied songs again are different and any combination of sounds creates a new perspective on a song. That to me is the whole point of being a musician, making those choices to express or enhance a song and seeing whether or not the audience agrees.
