Thread Name: Lyr Req: 'Still, Still, Still'
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Still, Still, Still'
I haven't found another printing, so I don't know whether the words are spelled correctly or not. "Hymns and Carols....." gives no notes on this version, unfortunately.
In German, tun schon is correct for 'tuan scho.' And I agree with the liebes. I have two rather heavy dictionaries, but they are no good for regionalisms.

This version in German is from the German-American Center, Indiana-Purdue Univs.; verses 1, 2, 6 of those you posted 02 Dec 01, but I'll repeat to keep it in the form at the website. The translation to English is the first of those I posted.

STILL, STILL, STILL
(Austrian Folksong, 1819)

Still, still, still,
weil's Kindlein schlafen will.
Die Englen tun schon jubilieren,
bei dem Kripplein musizieren.
Still, still, still,
weil's Kindlein schlafen will.
2.
Schlaf, schlaf, schlaf,
mein liebes Kindlein, schlaf!
Maria will dich niedersingen
ihre keusche Brust darbringen
Schlaf, schlaf, schlaf,
mein liebes Kindlein, schlaf!
3.
Ruh't, ruh't, ruh't,
Weil's Kindlein schlafen tut.
Sankt Josef löscht das Lichtlein aus,
Die Englen schützen's kleine Haus.
Ruh't, ruh't, ruh't,
Weil's Kindlein schlafen tut.
