That's easy - just change it (either version) to ...seemed somehow to look.... But I understood that split infinitives are now gramatically correct (as tends to happen when a rule gets broken often enough by enough people).

To answer Kevin's point, yes, songs do evolve as the writer occasionally thinks of a better line.
