I've been singing this song for years and I love it - people are always asking me to sing it, or for the words, who it was written by and where can they find other John Tams stuff.... I'm glad that I can direct them here, where it seems that a fair few other people enjoy the song as much as I do.

All praise to my mother for "giving" it away to me. There's a simplicity in the chorus which allows everybody to join in, but the harmony - whereever I have sung it - has always been totally gorgeous.

Incidently, I learnt it as "The gentry in *his* fine array," but that's the oral tradition for you.
