Commiserations to you, Tom Hamilton, on dropping your new camera.
I had a Nikon, a few years ago, which I dropped. It didn't seem to affect the battery, but sometimes flash cards would register as 'No Card Present'. I had to gently wiggle them in the slot to get them to work.
I also had a Canon 300D and, although I didn't drop it, I noticed that very occasionally the battery would sort of 'work loose' (the only explanation I can think of) and I would have to switch the camera off, remove the battery and re-insert it.

I've now got a Canon 400D with a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens. It's really, really cool - I hope I don't drop that!
