OIL FILLED RADIATORS are very effective as background heating and not very expensive to buy or you may even be able to borrow a couple to tide you over. I'm sure someone you know will have one.

I'ts sods law that if cenral heating is going to break down, it does it at the coldest time of the winter. Hope you cope OK,
