I agree with Spartacus and Elfcall.

When I was really young and rationing was still in force in England, we used margarine for everything except "bread & butter". If we had jam on your bread or any other spread or topping, we had "marg". You didn't waste "best butter" if it was going to be covered with marmalade or jam.

All these years later, I still adhere to the habit of a lifetime.
