When I was a kid I remember my mother telling me about how they bought margarine that was white and it came with a packet of yellow color they had to mix in themselves. That must have been in the 1920s or early 30s? The same motivation as the dairy lobby in Quebec, they wanted consumers to know they weren't getting real butter.
