For starters, if it's a river then it's not briney, unless you're at the estuary, and then you're not really in mining country. And if the river's that bad, you don't want to be chucking ducklings into it, because they'll get washed away and you'll never see them again. And if she's going to fall in somewhere she can't swim, it'd be somewhere without a proper bank, so you'll never get the ducklings out again anyway. And what's she doing hanging around a river in the first place if she can't swim?
