It's used for tanning too - urine that is, not woad. The law was that tanners were not allowed to set up their workshops closer than a mile to the city workshops and not upstream.

Apparently male urine was better than female urine and huge barrels were left in convenient places for men to use. Guess they were the original pissoirs.
