Although I grew up in a male-predominant household, I didn't learn to keep the toilet lid DOWN until I read that sometimes rats swim up the line and end up in the toilet bowl- and I was living on the first floor of a house. I figured that with the lid down the splashing sound I would hear would give me warning.
