In the US, we have always had a vast middle class with people moving freely up to "wealthy" and down to "poor". The Old World's economic system locked people in one place, resulting in seven generations of cobblers or carpenters. Here, a carpenters son becomes a contractor and his son becomes the owner of a major company is house construction. The US cannot always be judged by eyes that have only seen the European model.
