I'm reading a book by theologian Walter Wink called The Powers That Be: Theology for a New Millennium. Wink says the most predominant religious belief in the United States is what he calls the Myth of Redemptive Violence - the belief that violence can accomplish good. He says it is in our literature, our television and movies and music, and in our politics and military policy.

So, in a nation that believes that violence does good, isn't it appropriate that everyone be armed?

Can't say that I believe in the myth myself - but I have to say that it sometimes captures me and takes me where I'd rather not go.
