There are the challenge songs that go with the Mari LLwyd in Wales or the Pen y Gwyn in Cornwall where to gain entry to the house on visiting night - usually around 6th January - the Mari throws a verse and the company on the other side of the door have to find a verse in response. When they are unable to do that they have to open the door and let the Mari in, providing her with ale and food.
