Many years ago I campaigned on behalf of Senator Eugene McCarthy (back in the 1960s). He ran again (half-heartedly) in the 1972 election. (Nixon won.) A good friend of mine from the US called me on election night at about 3:00 AM. He was four sheets to the wind. He said, "Once again the American people get what they deserve. But why do I have to keep getting what they deserve?"

I guess the diference between you and many people is that you can sleep at night because you KNOW you did what you could. Sometimes, that has to be enough.
