Swiss friends living in Tipp have made a raised bed for lettuces. It's got wood all round, and at the top a 4"-wide strip of copper sheeting.

The combination of the drainage because the bed is raised, and the copper, which apparently gives slugs electric shocks, seems to keep them out.
