Thanks for setting me straight re "fell swoop," Amos.   After my initial befuddlement about the term, I connected it with the verb "to fell," as in "to cut down." Hence my guess that it was from logging (or some other sort of "harvesting").    Like many another etymological theory, it made sense, even if historically incorrecct.
