Subject: RE: Tech: Good UK ADSL broadband wanted
Sorry - I was the "Guest" on the last post. Thought I was logged in.

I know the device your father has - my late mother had one until last year. Obviously something like that has priority over any internet connection. I presume the device your father as isn't a BT lifeline, but one provided by the Social Services, and monitored by a control centre.

Yes - BT do supply you with two filters when they send you the router. You need one filter for every telephone using the BT line - so, if you have a 'phone in every room you'll need a filter with every phone. You can buy spare filters from BT or Maplins. I'm not a techie, but I do know from experience that a telephone plugged into the line socket without a filter doesn't work very well - if it works at all - once broadband has been enabled.

Alarm lines don't usually allow incoming calls for obvious reasons; that's what BT detected. The best thing is to unplug your fathers emergency unit while BT tests the line. The problem is - I know from experience, that the minute you disconnect the emergency unit, the control centre at the other end are likely to send out the cavalry. But is does only take seconds for BT to test the line.

I think that once you've got your broadband operating, and you've got a filter on the line to which your father's unit is connected, everything should work fine.
