When you sing the Star Spangled Banner you are singing a tune that has been around for the past 200 years.
If it hadn't been 'popular' it would never have lasted that long.

Granted the words were unlikely to be understood by the general public, they would belong to the more educated scholars but they were definitely about wine , women and song.
