I was glad to find something about this song. My father sang it this way, and his father who fought in the Boer war WW1 must have sung it to him:

Oh, the sun shines bright on Charlie Chaplin.
His boots are cracklin for the want of black'nin
And his old baggy troosers they need mendin,
Before they send him to the Dardanelles.

He sang it with a Scottish (Glasgow) accent and taught it to my son before he passed away two years ago.
