Hey Rap, think if we both call the same company at the same time we can get a deal on both jobs because of our (virtual) proximity? I need a new roof also.

Actually, the roofer I spoke to a week ago (before the insurance company denied the claim--heat, not hail, nailed my roof) stopped by yesterday with a sample--the same sample--that he showed me last week. I asked him about roofs tough enough to get me a discount with my insurance company, and this ain't it. He said "it depends on how long you'll be in the house," meaning if I put on a cheap roof now it's someone else's problem later if I'm planning to move soon. But I'm not planning to move, and I think spending $2000 more now, if it will save me 25% a year on insurance (that is a savings of over $500 a year) is a really good move. So I'm also going to get a second quote, from a roofer who has a little more initiative to offer alternatives. (The neighbors put on a new roof last year, different roofer, and I'll ask them about their resesarch. That guy is meticulous and probably got several quotes.)
