There is a very early Sarah Vaughan album with Clifford Brown that is really a peak for female jazz singers. She tended to get mannered, and had some albums with boring orchestration later on. I forget the label -- will check it out tonight.

Nina Simone's early "I Loves You Porgy" is pretty special too.
